8 Townsend St, Cheltenham

  • A painted mural on the wall of this town end pub shows a young couple as Adam and Eve. There is also a larger one, showing them in the Garden of Eden. Some years ago, Whitbread’s, the brewers, had the unusual idea of auctioning off the space on an external wall to be painted. The offer was taken up by a young sign- writer. He painted himself and his girlfriend as Adam and Eve. The pub exhibits ghostly manifestations. These include a Lady Spirit with a propensity for gin. During the night, there are sounds of doors opening and closing, with by morning, the level in the gin bottle has gone down.
